Summary

Reviews the depression-smell link (Kohli 2016 + others): depressed people smell slightly worse (effect ~0.2 on the Sniffin' Sticks Test); anosmics are much more depressed (BDI ~14 vs ~5), with sudden smell-loss (PURIOD 76%) worse than gradual (CRS 40%); and the clinching rat olfactory-bulbectomy model (remove the bulbs -> depression). Mechanisms: depression likely reduces sensory acuity generally (visual contrast, hearing) as a systemic disorder; but does reduced acuity cause depression? Leaning NO (total colorblindness isn't linked to depression), so smell may be uniquely depressogenic -- it's emotionally salient and the olfactory bulb feeds serotonin synthesis via the raphe nuclei. Treatment musings: SSRIs grow olfactory-bulb nerves; strong-smell/aromatherapy results are sketchy mouse-study territory.
